Type Locality and Naming

The type section is located the limestone massif situated near Hoang Mai Village, Quynh Luu District, Nghe An Province (N= 19° 35‘; E= 105°43’). It was named by the village.

Lithology and Thickness

Limestone and marl; (1). Grey marl intcrbedded with calcareous siltstone, 80 m thick; containing the bivalves Costatoria curvirostris and c. proharpa. (2). Grey, dark grey, medium-bedded limestone locally bearing either bitumen or chert, 400-450 m thick; containing the ammonoid Leiophyllites sp., the bivalve Gervillia aff. praecursor), and the brachiopods Adygella hoangmaiensis, and Coenothyris angusta.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Unconformably upon the Dong Trau Fm volcanics of late Anisian.

Upper contact

Uppermost limestone member gradually grades upwards into the clay-rich Quy Lang Fm of Ladinian age.

Regional extent

Occurs in southern Thanh Hoa – northern Nge An provinces.

Coenothyris vulgaris, Aulacolhyris angusta, Adygella hoangmaiensis, Mentzelia mentzelii, and Hoicorhynchia bogumilorum.

Based on stratigraphic relationships and fossils, it is dated as Late Anisian. [Put here as latest Anisian, because underlying Dong Trau volcanics are assigned as mid-Anisian.]
